500 years of Reformation history in embroidered pictures

Besides music and dance performances, folk-craft markets and many accompanying activities, two exhibitions will also be prepared for visitors. One of them is Embroidered 500-year history of the Reformation in Slovakia.

In 2017, Protestant churches remembered the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation

"The Reformation was a process that aimed to reform the Roman Catholic Church, and its beginning is usually considered to be the publication of Martin Luther's 95 Theses in 1517," says Adriýn Kobetič, curator of the exhibition. The first signs of the reformation process appeared in Slovakia shortly after the publication of Luther's aforementioned theses, unleashing a long and varied history of Protestantism that is still being written today. However, significant moments, personalities, monuments and events were not only woven into the threads of time, but also into the exhibition presented as part of Trnava Gate 2023 in the chapel of the west wing of the town hall in the town hall courtyard," he adds.

The exhibition includes a series of sixteen embroidered paintings, each measuring 100x120 cm

The author of the artwork is architect prof. Ing. arch. Janka Krivošová, PhD., who captured on the background canvas various themes from the history of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (ECAV) in Slovakia. "On the basis of her suggestions, women in the individual seniorates of the ECAV, under the guidance of embroiderer Emilia Fojtíková, embroidered the motif using the tapestry technique, thus immortalising the image through a minucioso layering of threads." The whole image-making project was of a distinctly communal nature. Its aim was not only to commemorate the history of the ECAV in Slovakia, but also to unite believers across Slovakia. The individual embroiderers worked on the entire process completely free of charge, with a commitment to their faith and a conviction of the importance of the legacy of the Reformation.

The paintings depict important faces and their significant achievements in our history

"The individual paintings depict church dignitaries and dignitaries, parish priests and parish priestesses, writers and writers, as well as other notable personalities. Apart from figures, however, it is also possible to recognize in the paintings famous evangelical buildings or events that concern them or the ECAV in Slovakia," concludes Adrián.

The exhibition will be ready for visitors in the town hall chapel from 16th to 23rd August at the following opening times: during the festival days (18th August - 20th August) from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., other days in the afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In addition to this exhibition, you will find a second one in the Čepan Gallery in the Nádvorie, where the "Čarovné nite v čipke" is held by the Club of Trnava Bobbinmakers. Magic Threads in Lace will run from 16 to 23th August with opening hours from 10:00 to 19:00 on all days.
